Frequently Asked Questions about Interior Design

Whether you’re planning a remodel, building a new home, or simply looking for professional guidance, it’s natural to have questions about the design process and what to expect.

Here, you’ll find answers to some of the questions we hear most often about working with WellHaven Design, our services and how we can help you move forward with greater clarity and confidence.

Planning Your Project

The earlier, the better — especially for new construction, remodeling, or meaningful updates to your home. Involving a designer early helps clarify priorities, avoid costly missteps, and ensure your space is both functional and cohesive from the beginning.

WellHaven Design works with homeowners who want professional guidance to make confident, cohesive design decisions. Projects may include new construction, remodels, individual room updates, finish and material selections, space planning, lighting, color direction, and reviewing plans for function, flow and everyday livability. Our services range from focused professional guidance to comprehensive Design Direction, allowing the level of design support to be matched to the project.

We work with a wide range of project budgets and prioritize aligning design decisions with your comfort level and long-term goals. Open conversations around budget help guide recommendations and ensure thoughtful use of resources throughout the process.

Availability can fill quickly, especially for consultations. Reaching out early helps ensure design support is available before key decisions are locked in.

WellHaven Design serves homeowners throughout St. Augustine, St. Johns County and Nocatee, with a focus on residential interior design, new construction and remodeling projects in Northeast Florida. If your project is outside these areas, contact us to discuss the location and scope and determine whether we may be a good fit for in person or remote services.

Working with WellHaven Design

Every project begins with understanding how you live, what you’re drawn to, and what you hope to achieve. From there, we define a clear direction and guide decisions through thoughtful planning, clear communication, and steady progress — ensuring the process feels organized, supportive, and aligned from start to finish.

Absolutely. Our approach is centered on understanding your lifestyle, preferences, and priorities. The goal is not to impose a signature look, but to create a home that feels authentic to you — elevated, functional, and personal.

Yes. Design Direction is WellHaven Design’s most comprehensive residential interior design service and can include design development, selections, specifications, sourcing, procurement, and installation or placement of furnishings and decor. WellHaven does not provide construction project management, general contracting, or supervision of construction trades.

Yes. WellHaven Design can collaborate with your builder, architect, contractor and other project professionals to help keep interior design decisions aligned with the overall vision for your home. Depending on the scope of our services, we may review plans, provide design recommendations, clarify selections and communicate design intent while working alongside the professionals responsible for construction, engineering and permitting.

The best place to begin is by reaching out through the contact form and scheduling a Discovery Call, if you’d like. From there, we’ll connect to discuss your project, determine the right service, and outline next steps.

Choosing the Right Design Service

Yes. Design Consultations are a focused way to gain professional guidance, clarity, and next steps. They’re ideal if you need expert input, decision support, or direction without committing to a larger scope of work.

In-home consultations are available for clients within our service areas, including St. Augustine, Ponte Vedra, and surrounding communities. Meeting in your space allows us to better understand layout, light, flow, and how your home is truly lived in — informing more thoughtful and practical recommendations.

A Design Consultation is a focused working session for specific questions, decisions, or design challenges. Design Direction is WellHaven Design’s most comprehensive residential service, providing a broader level of design development, selections, specifications, sourcing, procurement and coordination throughout the design process.

During your Discovery Call, we’ll talk through your goals, timeline, and where you are in the process. From there, we’ll recommend the service that best aligns with your needs and scope.

Deliverables depend on the service selected and our agreed-upon scope of work. Some engagements focus on written guidance and strategy, while others include visual references or design documentation. All deliverables are clearly outlined before we begin.

Investment varies based on the level of support and scope of work. During your Discovery Call, we’ll discuss expectations and ensure the service aligns with your goals, priorities, and comfort level before moving forward.

Yes, depending on the service. Design Consultations and Plan Reviews can provide clear direction for you to carry forward independently. Design Direction can provide a much more comprehensive level of support, including sourcing, procurement, and installation of furnishings and decor when included in the project scope.

New Construction + Remodeling

Yes, depending upon the stage of your project. We welcome the opportunity to be on your team of professionals with your builder/architect to assess layout, flow, and functionality, identifying opportunities for refinement before the plans are finalized.

The earlier, the better. For new construction, an interior design review is most valuable before floor plans are finalized and before major structural, electrical, plumbing and lighting decisions are locked in. For a remodel, involving a designer during the planning stage allows more opportunity to identify issues with layout, circulation, storage, lighting and everyday function before construction begins and changes become more costly or difficult.

While involving a designer early gives you the greatest opportunity to influence layout, lighting, materials and other key decisions, there can still be meaningful value in bringing in design guidance after a project is underway. Depending on the stage of construction or remodeling, WellHaven Design may still be able to help identify opportunities, refine selections, address functional concerns and provide direction for decisions that have not yet been finalized. The sooner you reach out, the more options you are likely to have.

Even if your project is complete and now you’re furnishing and decorating, it’s still not too late for a designer to help you finish your home in a way that reflects your vision.

No. WellHaven Design complements the work of your architect, builder and contractor rather than replacing them. Our role is focused on the interior experience of the home, including function, flow, space planning, materials, finishes and other design decisions within the scope of your project. Architectural, engineering, construction and permitting responsibilities remain with the appropriately licensed project professionals.

When reviewing floor plans, WellHaven Design looks beyond room dimensions to consider how the home will actually function in everyday life. We evaluate circulation and furniture placement, storage, natural light, door and walkway clearances, kitchen and bath functionality, lighting and electrical considerations, sightlines, and opportunities to improve long-term livability. The goal is to identify potential issues early, while there is still time to make informed changes before construction or remodeling progresses.
